Don't Judge Me!

Where did we derive the concept that people can't or shouldn't judge us? Was it from Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." ???

Yeah... I'm sure that is where we got this from. The sentiment "don't judge me" is usually used when someone is aware that the acts they are performing are sinful in nature or may not be upstanding or pleasing but is stated as a reminder that everyone sins. But like we do with many other scriptures, we've taken this one verse and ran with it, disregarding other biblical instruction on judging.  We say "don't judge me" as a defense mechanism when we know we are dead wrong. By reading the entire passage that our coined scripture comes from, we gather that Jesus isn't telling us not to judge, He is telling us not to judge UNJUSTLY. There are several other scriptures in the bible that support us holding each other accountable... or what is known today as judging. Don't believe me? Watch this...

By interpreting each part of the remainder of that passage, more clarity is brought to the judging issue. If we read further down in Matthew, we will see that Jesus actually continues with saying (Matt 7:2-5), "For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged (if we judge with an evil heart or dark intent, His judgment of us will reflect it; if we judge nobly with honesty and justice, His judgment of us will reflect that, too), and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (if we use extremes or exaggerations or other nasty means, His judgment of us will reflect it and judging with fairness and compassion will garner likewise in His judgment of us). Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye (point out his sins, "minor" in Jesus' example here) and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye (our own sins, even and especially those we will not admit, magnified by our selective blindness)? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' (tell him of his "minor" sins) when all the time there is a plank in your own eye (that there are greater or the same sins in our own lives which we do nothing about or think we are above)? You hypocrite (pointing out the sins of others while acting like we ourselves are above sin), first take the plank out of your own eye (sincerely ask the Lord for forgiveness and learn and live the Truth and Light by His Word), and then you will see clearly (be in a righteous position) to remove the speck from your brother's eye (to judge and to help him out of his bondage to sin)."

And this isn't it, honey! There are several verses where we are instructed to hold one another accountable. Check some of these scriptures out. No interpretation needed... it's clear:

  • 1 Corinthians 6:2 Or do you not know that the Lord's people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?
  • Proverbs. 3:21 My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion,
  • John 7:24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.
  • 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked person from among you."
  • James 5: 19-20 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover a multitude of sins.
  • Matthew 18:15 "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over."
  • Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
Ok, so you may say well what about the woman caught in the act of adultery in John 8:1-11.  The scribes and Pharisees told Jesus that according to the law she was to be stoned to death.  He told them "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." One by one each man dropped his stone and walked away. Jesus was not arguing with the judgment. Nor was Jesus arguing the law or the woman's guilt. Jesus was arguing with their right to execute the woman. Once all the men had dropped their stones Jesus confronted the woman and asked her if any of the men threw a stone at her (condemned her). When she answered "No one, sir", Jesus told her that neither would He - He forgave her of her sin. He did not excuse the sin of adultery, he forgave her of it.  He even corrected her of the sin by telling her "Go and sin no more." In this situation Jesus was not saying they couldn't justly judge her, he was saying they couldn't punish or condemn her. Neither can we. We may point out the error of each other's ways, hold each other accountable justly, but we have no authority for making someone pay for any wrong they have done. God is the ultimate judge.

It is very important to note here that there is a proper way to do all things. That when holding someone accountable it should be done with grace, in love, and according to the word of God. If you notice someone that is not a child of the Kingdom doing wrong, take it as an opportunity to witness to them. But if they are of the Kingdom, it is your responsibility to remind them of the word of God. If acts of love proceed the correction, the person is much more liable to believe that the correction was done in love. Don't go beating someone over the head with your correction, do it with grace. And if it is not accepted, then pray about it and for them.

Secondly we must make sure that we sweep around our own front door before trying to sweep around our neighbors. Example: I can't chastise you and tell you what the bible says about adultery, if we both know I'm cheating on my husband too. But if there is a sin that God has delivered me from, then as your sister in Christ, I should hold you accountable, seeking to help you, and witness how I was delivered as evidence. In the same token, you should seek to help me with what you don't battle with as much. It's a two way street. We, as siblings in Christ, are charged to help each other along the narrow path.

So the next time you feel as though someone is judging you, remember that as your brother or sister in Christ, they are being obedient. As Christians we are suppose to hold each other accountable. Instead of getting an attitude, receive the correction. And don't go around pointing the finger at others. Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house. If you know there are things you need to get under the blood, ask God to work on you before you go trying to work on everybody else.

With Love,
-Kimyatta

Daily Prayer: Lord, teach me the error of my ways and reveal to me my sins and shortcomings. Help me to justly correct and hold my brothers and sister accountable. Soften my heart, Father, so that I am able to receive their guidance in grace and love.

Telephone,...It's God!

The most frequent complaint or cause of frustration for many of us is when we feel as though we can't hear from God. We are praying and praying and not hearing anything back. Well, sis, there are a few reasons why you are not hearing anything. You very well may be on the right track, following directions that God has given you so the second time you ask there is no need for Him to say anything. (When people constantly remind you of something they've asked you to do, it shows a lack of trust.) In this instance, continue doing whatever the last thing is He confirmed. Joyce Meyer's said once that she felt like she couldn't hear from God so she just kept doing the last thing He told her to do until she heard from Him again. There is no need for a teacher to continue correcting you if you are doing well.

But in other instances we can't hear from God because maybe we missed the call! Jesus is on the mainline, sis!!! Maybe God has already given you the direction you are seeking but you were too busy to answer the phone. Maybe you are seeking advice from everywhere but God; friends, family, websites, coworkers....anybody but God! Take your prayers and petitions to Him and wait for Him to answer. He may have called and you answered the phone and didn't let Him get a word in. Sheesh, sis. You just went on and on and on and on. He didn't have a chance to say anything. It is important that we understand that an essential part of prayer is listening. Prayer is a two way communication; you talk, God listens. God talks, you listen.

There are also situations where we are on the phone with God and trying to do a million other things at the same time. Watching tv, listening to music, washing dishes...just distracted and all over the place. You can barely hear from Him because there is too much background noise. Get to your quiet place so you can cancel out all other noises and be still! Pay attention. What you don't want is for God to force the distractions away.

Maybe God is calling from a different number and you don't recognize it so you didn't answer. Or even worse maybe you answered, you hear Him and didn't know it was Him because you usually don't answer so you don't know how He sounds. God speaks to us in a number of different ways. It may be confirmation through a sermon, scripture, a song, prayer with a friend, or a blatant sign. Just because God isn't speaking in this voice you've made up in your head or seen on movies, doesn't mean He isn't speaking to you. Be open to accepting Him through whatever avenue He makes Himself available to you. Pray for the spirit to discern His voice and direction.

There are also times when we've heard God clearly, we know what He has said. But it wasn't what we wanted to hear so we keep waiting, thinking if we keep calling Him pleading our case He'll change His mind and say what we want to hear. Nope. Not happening, sis. God's word is final and eternal. If He has told you to do something or given you direction on something chances are He isn't going to change His mind so you may as well just be obedient. 1 Samuel 15:22, And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of ramsThe situation or circumstance may change or if God see's you are being obedient to His initial instructions, He may direct you further or alter your path, but you must be obedient to what He says when He says it. As my sis, D'Lorah says, "Delay is an excuse to disobey."

Don't screen God's calls or have poor phone etiquette, sis. He wants to hear from you but he also wants to talk to you. If you are going through a period where you are longing to hear from Him, be patient and read your bible. Remember, that bible is HIS WORD! He speaks through it.

Love you!!,
-Kimyatta

Daily Prayer: Dear God, please help me to clearly discern Your voice. Teach me to be quiet and obedient. Lord, I yearn for Your instruction and I trust Your directions. Speak to me Father and open my heart to hear.

Jesus, Be a Tow Truck!

This post is a little random, but God put it on my heart so follow me.... Not very long ago I was heading to get my little brother from work and drove behind a tow truck similar to the one pictured below for practically the entire way. Initially my thought was, "Smh, tow trucks...taking people's money and cars. Nothing but bad news." Then I noticed the cross shaped mechanism on the back. And thought... whoa, Jesus be a tow truck. Maybe they aren't that bad after all!

My initial thought of the tow truck was due to a conditioned response.  I've come out of buildings a few times hysterical, unable to find my car, only to find it had been towed. I would be able to get it back, but there was always a hefty fee and the initial panic of "OMG! WHERE IS MY CAR!?" My response was also prompted by the knowledge that tow trucks are typically called when a car needs repair, has been wrecked, or has broken down. They are also responsible for picking up vehicles that have been repossessed for non-payment. If you think about it, none of these on the surface are good things. All of them would probably constitute a bad day in anyone's book. But are those things really that bad? Less emotional and more rational thought allows us to see the tow truck as coming to the rescue. Jesus, be a tow truck? Jesus to the rescue.

Like a car that has been repossessed, we couldn't pay the price so Jesus to the rescue. He paid the price for our sins. (Hebrews 9:15, 1 Timothy 2:6) In addition, how much of a burden was that car note that the owner was unable to pay? How stressful was that situation that the owner may have been subjecting themselves to, unwilling to relinquish and just too prideful to let it go? Enters the tow truck, here to take the worry away. That very issue that you are holding on to, trying to figure out how you are gonna make it work, stressing over can just be turned over to Jesus. Let him pick up your worries. Psalm 68:19 says "Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens." Granted, it may be embarrassing that your car was repossessed but the peace of not being bogged down with the payment and the relief of not having to hide the car will be priceless. Likewise, it might be embarrassing that people know you've had to give up whatever was weighing you down but letting it go will free you. Jesus to the rescue.

Like the car that has broken down, needs repair, or has been wrecked, we often are in bad shape ourselves. Life is beating us up and we don't know how much more we can take. We are literally and figuratively broken down and wrecked, but Jesus to the rescue. The tow truck carries that car when it won't move. It takes it be fixed and places it in good hands. Jesus is a healer, he restores and he redeems. He carries us when we just don't think we can make it any further. Isaiah 40:11 tells us that He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart. There is only one way to the Father, through Jesus, the son.(John 14:6) Jesus carries us to God to be all fixed. Jesus to the rescue.

Like the car that has been illegally parked, sometimes knowingly, and is possibly blocking someone else's way, we are often out of place. We may be blocking someone else from God or willfully doing wrong.  Sometimes it is necessary for Him to move us out of our own way and the way of others. If the tow truck didn't move the car, it could have caused an accident, someone could have hit it, or they may not have been able to park in a space that was designated for them. Jesus will move you. Even when it's frustrating for you, it is usually for your own good. You may have to pay for the mistake, but your car is safe. You may face the consequences of your actions, but your life is saved and what God has designated for you is for you! Jesus to the rescue.

Not all that happens to you is bad. Understand that God sees what we don't and in all things God works for the good of those who love him. (Romans 8:28) Trust His plan, He does not see things as man does. It is impossible for us to understand what He is doing sometimes but if you have faith and you stay in relationship with Him, you can trust that He is working it out for you. Often what we see as a mishap is really God protecting us.

Funny story: As I was looking for the picture for this post I actually saw another post similar to this. Not only was that confirmation, but it let me know that maybe I'm not as random as I thought. Look at God ;)

Daily Prayer: Father God, thank you for your son Jesus. Thank you for protecting me and looking out for my best interst even when I don't understand what you are doing. You are God and your plan is perfect. Continue to cover me with Your grace.

In the Bathroom

The bathroom. It's where you go to handle your business, to clean up, and to lose waste. If you have company or are visiting someone you typically change clothes in the bathroom as well. You brush your teeth, take care of your hair, and maybe even apply makeup. It is here that you are able to see your reflection and examine yourself in the mirror. You lotion up, put on deodorant and make sure you are fresh. Depending on where you are going, you might even put on your favorite body spray or perfume. One thing is for sure, this is your private place. The door is closed, no one can see you.

Many of us talk on the phone while in the bathroom or scream through the door. There is an avenue of communication open to the outside world but we are not exposed for them to see. While in the shower there is even another layer of coverage for privacy: your shower curtain. Of course it is dual purposed because it keeps the floor from getting wet and you from splashing water all over the place and making a mess. If you are like me, sometimes you play music or keep reading material in the bathroom. It get's hot and steamy in the bathroom. Sometimes it gets lonely in there...which is why we talk through the door or on the phone, I assume. Or perhaps that's why we pray when we are there, because we are lonely. Hmmm... the bathroom is often where we pray...... ahhhhh, the irony.

There is a season that God places us in sometimes that I like to call "The Bathroom Season." It is during this time that he hides us from the world in order to clean us up and make us presentable before reintroducing us to society. It's the type of cleaning that the psalmist asked for in Psalm 51:2 when he said wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. God uses this season to prepare us or get us ready. He shows us who we are by revealing us to ourselves (letting us take a look in the mirror). During this season, you will learn things about yourself that you weren't aware of. Your flaws will become clear, your shortcomings will become apparent, and God will instill in you those things that you need to work on before leaving the bathroom. Maybe a hair is out of place or your panties are inside out. I don't know... but whatever it is, God will show you those things that need fixing and allow you ample time to fix them without everyone seeing it. If he is preparing you for something in your next season, you will be able to use this bathroom time as time to practice or fix those things.

It is quiet in the bathroom, so there is time to reflect, to repent, and to make resolution with God by asking for forgiveness. This season puts us back in relationship with God. It gives us the opportunity to confess our sins and allow Him to take them away.  I did say that the bathroom is also where you rid yourself of waste. Well, Psalm 51:7 of the KJV says purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow. Purge, meaning to rid, is used here although in other versions the verb purify is used. The herb hyssop was used by the Hebrews in sacred purification.  Therefore this particular verse represents the cleansing and purifying that would typically be done with hyssop, instead it is an allegory referencing he cleansing available to us from our Father . How awesome is our God?! We enter this season....  the bathroom, filthy, full of junk that is probably making our stomach hurt or sick in some fashion, smelling bad and sometimes looking a mess. Only to leave white as snow, so fresh and so clean! No condemnation in Christ means you are not punished for your shortcomings. God isn't angry at you, sis! He wants to clean you up.

Your bathroom season doesn't mean that you must cease all communication from the outside world. Just as we talk on the phone or yell through the door, there are avenues of communication and interaction during your bathroom season. But don't be surprised if you still feel alone. God needs for you to feel alone so that you will rely solely on Him. He needs to get you alone so that He can talk to you. We depend solely on Him because no one else is there, and if they are, they just can't seem to comfort us. And just as when you are in the shower, He will also provide an extra barrier of protection to ensure that people don't get too close to you until He is ready. This, like the shower curtain is to protect both you and them. It protects you from being seen and it keeps them from getting dirty water, or whatever mess you are still holding on to from splashing on them.

Recall I said that sometimes while in the bathroom I play music or read. This is indicative of praising and studying the word while you are in your bathroom season. Praise and worship is essential to our relationship with Christ because it draws Him near. James 4:8 says come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. We enter God's presence as we give Him praise and worship Him.  Also, God's voice is often revealed through His word. So during this season of seclusion and loneliness, while you are hidden from the world and you feel all alone, stay in His word more than ever. He will talk to you through scripture. Remember 2 Timothy 3:16 says that all scripture is God breathed and is good for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness

I know that the bathroom can be frustrating. I gets all hot and steamy or you may have a hard time eliminating waste (we're being real here, honey. It's just us). Some of those old habits are hard to break, that's waste. You can't even see in the mirror for a few minutes and you feel alone. Heaven forbid you are out of tissue. Yes sis, there will be times during this season where you are confused, unprepared and don't even feel as though you know yourself anymore. But trust that God has you there for your own good. He is making you presentable, responsible and getting you ready for the world.

Just stay in there until you are clean. You will know it is time to step out when God opens the door for you. You will began to make Kingdom connections, as I call them. People will notice you, your light will attract them, you will be fearlessly exposed. The Lord will strategically place people in your life that speak life to you, that pray with you, advise you and help you keep your focus on Him. You will begin to get opportunities and you will notice your prayers coming into fruition. But more than anything, you will feel free.

Sometimes we leave the bathroom looking totally different than we did when we entered. But more importantly, we feel different. We feel clean, lighter, and more approachable. Unashamed. Whereas before, you were shamed for anyone to see you that way! God is making you into a new creature while you are in that bathroom so you will not leave this season the way you went into it. Your burdens will be lifted after God rids you of the waste that has been worrying you to death. He said in his word that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. (Matthew 11:30)

Now ladies, even when we are no longer in the bathroom season, we still have to go to the bathroom.  If it is to freshen up, to grab some tissue, or whatever. There will be days that you need to step in your bathroom really quick and ask God to clean you. We are to die to our flesh daily. Dying to your flesh is killing the nasty thoughts, negative attitudes, and ungodly desires. Sometimes I have to die to my flesh hourly. But the important thing is that I take it to God and He rids me of the waste and cleans me up. He lets me use the bathroom whenever I have to and He puts me there when He needs to. :) Sis, the bathroom isn't a bad place. This season is only temporary. Soon... you'll step out looking like a million bucks and ready to go!

With Love,
-Kimyatta

Daily Prayer: Heavenly Father, while I am in this season of restoration and cleansing, please increase my patience. I know that you do all things well Lord and I trust that you have me here for a reason. Wash me clean of my sins Lord. Forgive me for all that I have done wrong. I give myself to you to be made over.

Sinful Tongue Part 2

In the previous post, we discussed the importance of speaking as a Christian. Recall the ways we've already covered in which we can use our tongues in ways that are not pleasing to God. They were by lying, flattery, being proud, and through overuse. Hopefully that gave you something to think about. The first step in asking God to correct you is to recognize that something needs correcting.  I hope you are ready to dive even deeper in examining the errors of our tongue. Let's pick up where we left off with more ways that God is not pleased with our talk and ways that we are misusing our mouths as Christians. Go ahead and get ready... these particular ways may apply to a few more of us than the previous post:

Too Fast
We have all spoken before time. Instead of waiting on the Lord or choosing our words wisely we just blurt it out. God's word says the following in Proverbs 18:13: "To answer before listening - is a folly and shame"  James 1:19 warns us to be quick to hear and slow to speak. Seriously sis, once those words leave your mouth they are out there. They can't be recalled and the damage is done. It is worth it to take some time and think before you speak. We boast sometimes that "I say whatever is on my mind." That ain't cute, girlfriend. If our thoughts are innappropriate, we should think before saying anything. Maturity shows in our ability to filter our speech so that it is pleasing to God and not hurtful to others. Besides, if you speak before you listen how do you even know you are responding to the right thing?

Two Faced
Proverbs 25:23 and Romans 1:30 make mention of a sly tongue or a slanderer. I'm sure we don't need the explanation but this is someone who uses their tongue against you when you aren't present, yet they will not face you with their charges when you are present. Christians very often show two faces by criticizing each other or talking about a brother or sister in Christ rather than encouraging them or holding them accountable. Proverbs 6:19 warns against the false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Gossipping
Proverbs 18:8 says, "The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts" Leviticus 19:16 says, "Do not go about spreading slander among your people." As Christians we have a responsibility to deny our own desires and seek to edify other Christians (Rom. 14:19; Philip. 2:3).  Gossiping and spreading the business of or lies about others is not edifying to the Kingdom and is one of Satan's greatest weapons against us. We should do all that we can to stop gossip. Do not participate in it and do not allow anyone to tell you gossip. If you refuse to listen to it, eventually people will not even think to share it with you. What we allow, we encourage. Don't let people gossip around you.

Cursing
The cursing Christians are some of the most skilled cursers I've ever heard in my life!!! You have not been cursed out until a Christian woman lets you have it. That's a shame, but it is true. Profanity is often used as a means of expressing deep or sincere emotions. Sometimes it is used for lack of expanded vocabulary. But for some of us, myself included, it just fits in a sentence perfectly sometimes. Let's repent y'all! I am guilty of slipping up in anger occasionally. Romans 3:14 says, "Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." This passage is actually explaining unsaved people and their ungodly ways, yet there are a great many professing Christians who curse regularly."He loved to pronounce a curse- may it come back on him. he found no pleasure in blessing- may it be far from him. He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil."(Psalm 109:17-18) I can't stress enough how important it is for us to not allow curses to flow freely from the same mouth we use to bless God's holy name.

Smart Mouth
I'm going to be honest with y'all. As I was preparing to write this post, I did more repenting than writing. I spit fire when it comes to smart remarks! :( I hope God is speaking to you as much as He is speaking to me, sis. I have a smart mouth. We've disguised the negative attribute by dressing it up in a more acceptable term; sarcasm. Proverbs 12:18 speaks of this tongue by saying, "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Some people have a sharp piercing tongue which Satan uses to offend and insult others. As Christians, we are called to speak in grace. (Colossians 4:6) Titus 2:8 commands us to use sound speech which cannot be condemned. It is easier to catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. As it is more easily to reach people with graceful, compassionate speech rather than harsh, sarcastic, bitter words.

Quiet Mouse
Just as it is possible for us to talk too much, it is also possible for us to not talk enough. We have been called to speak out, witness, and testify in the name of Jesus! In Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Christians have an obligation to tell others about the saving grace of Jesus. To be silent about Christ is to sin against Christ. Jesus said, "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." (Mark 8:38) I know that it was difficult for me to speak up about God for a very long time so I had to pray for the Holy Spirit to speak through me and even give me opportunities to share His word. Sometimes it's easier to tell the world, as we should... but it starts in our own homes or right next door, witnessing to people that we see every day. Practice!

Now I know that this can be difficult, especially when you've been use to speaking a certain way for so long and granted just as those habits were not built over night, they will be hard to break. The most important thing is to start from the inside out and allow the Holy Spirit the freedom to operate in your speech. As your heart and mind are transformed, you will began to talk differently. It may not hurt to keep in mind that God hears these words that are coming from your mouth at all times. What if the Lord comes back right while you are letting somebody have it? As Christians, we are representatives of Christ. So not only should we not act and speak as the world, but we should be an example to the world of godly behavior. Watch your mouth!

With love,
-Kimyatta

Daily Prayer: Lord, please help me to use my mouth only in ways that are pleasing to you. Help me to examine my thoughts before I speak and give me the words and opportunity to build others up instead of tearing them down.

Sinful Tongue Part 1

One of the most outward indicators that God had really begun a work in my life was in my speech. You wouldn't believe the things that came out of my mouth when I was in the world. A.MESS! Sometimes I look back at old Facebook or Twitter post and I literally get sick to my stomach. I cursed like a sailor, gossiped, was very negative, lied, argued, tore people down, and so on. As God began to transform my heart, without effort the things that came from my mouth were different. This was evidence to me that our heart is visible in what we allow to exit our mouths.  Jesus said that "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh." (Matthew 12:34)

My study of God's word further revealed how important it was that we are careful about what comes out of our mouths. James 3:10 really opened my eyes when the writer called me out in scripture. "Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing, my brother this should not be." OMG! It hit home for me there... think about it, it is detestable that the same mouth we use to give God praise, is also the same mouth we use to do the very things He despises. Very hypocritical.

Society has made it okay to tear people down, to talk behind people's backs, to use profanity, and to even lie. But for the Christian, this is not okay. According to Proverbs 18:21, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." In James 3:6, the Bible says that the tongue is "a fire, a world of iniquity", and James 3:8 calls the tongue a "deadly poison."  1 Peter 2:1 tells us to rid ourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. The matters of the mouth appear in great number throughout the bible, showing us the importance of it's proper use in our Christianity. You very well may not think you have a problem with your tongue. Well let's review some of the ways God says we misuse it...

Lying
None of us can stand to be lied to but all of us can admit that we've lied before. If you say you've never lied...you're a liar.  Proverbs 25:18 says, "Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is one who give false testimony against a neighbor." The thing about a lying tongue is that it has no restriction. It will lie about anyone, anywhere, or anything and is not easily detected. A lying tongue is indicative of one that is not of God. Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44), and God said that he hates a lying tongue (Proverbs 6:17, Psalm 5:9). According to Revelation 21:8, all liars will join other sinners in the lake of fire. Seriously... a lie is not worth your salvation.

Flattery
I certainly had no idea that over complementing someone/something or "flattery" was considered a sin of the tongue. However Romans 16:28 is one place in the bible that we see that it is deemed that such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. "By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people." We see in Psalm 12:3 "May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue." The word tells us that whoever corrects a person will gain favor rather than one who flatters a person. (Proverbs 28:23) Just to be clear, flattery is just a form of lying, and it has no place in the life of a Christian.

Proud Tongue
We all know someone that is very boastful, overly confident, and has no problem letting you know exactly how great they are. Someone with a proud tongue will typically only talk about themselves and does not listen very well. A proud-tongued Christian will talk much of his knowledge and service, but very little about the Lord. You can't tell folks with a proud tongue anything because they know everything. Sis, I hope this isn't you! God doesn't like that. 1 Corinthians 1:31 said that if we are to boast we should only boast in the Lord. We know that without Him we would have not, be not, or do not.. so give the credit where the credit is due. Be humble and show humility in your speech. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you because it really ain't about you.

Overuse
Yes, it is a sin to talk too much. Shut up sometimes, girlfriend! Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 says "Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. A dream comes when there are many cares and many words mark the speech of a fool" That pretty much sums it up, sweetie. The more we talk, the more likely we are to sin: to lie, to brag, to gossip. In addition, it is practically impossible to listen if you are busy talking.

Let these matters sink in and ask God to help you correct your speech. Seek Him to cleanse your heart and soften your tone if necessary. Delivery of speech is just as important as what is being said. As a Christian, the easiest way to show who you belong to is by speaking to people in grace. It is often not what we say, it's how we say it.

With Love,

Daily Prayer: Lord please help me to control my mouth. I now know how important it is for me to speak in a godly manner and I am a representative of your kingdom. You have given clear instructions in your word how I am to use my tongue. It is my prayer that the words from my mouth are edifying and build up others.

Scripture to Study:  Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Gossip, cursing, speaking negatively, blaspheming God!

Hiding the Word in Your Heart

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:10-11

How do you know whether the decisions you are making are godly (of God) or not? How do you know if the things you are doing are in God's will? How do you keep from sinning? By hiding God's word in your heart!!! I can't stress the importance of memorizing scripture enough. Jesus told the Sadducees in Matthew 22:29, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God." This is something that I've been working on and I know it is an ongoing process. Lord, my memory is the worst! So y'all pray for me and we will work together on this one. Although I have to study a little harder than most to memorize scriptures, I know it is of utmost importance. Here's why:

  • Gives us godly wisdom - People often ask me how does God speak to me. Like... can I hear him? What does His voice sound like? Etc... Well one way that God speaks to us is through His word found in scripture! It is true, eternal, and live! When we memorize scriptures, we have God's word readily available when needed to respond to situations, make decisions, or to even convict us when we do something we know we ain't got no business. Example: Let's say you are at work and you've been given an extra assignment or one you are not sure you can get done. You've been studying Philippians 4:13 all week and you remember I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. So you go forth and do your best. That is God speaking to you through His word and comforting you. That is godly wisdom; it's what we know as our conscience, but replaced with the word of God instead of what we think.
  • Helps us to witness to others - By memorizing scriptures we are able to share them with others and help them in their situations or possibly introduce someone to the love of Jesus.
  • Teaches us how to pray - When we pray, we should be praying according to God's will. Well... how do we know what God's will is, if we do not know His word?
  • Equips us for spiritual warfare- I am not the only one that wakes up with an attitude sometimes and everything in the world gets on my nerves. I know I'm not. :) On those days, I feel the enemy attacking me and I am able to defeat his deception not only with my spiritual armor, but with God's word of reassurance hidden in my heart. Sometimes I have to repeat scriptures I've memorized to myself throughout the day.
  • Tells you what you believe - I know this seems like common sense, but seriously, without having the word hidden in our heart do we really know what we believe? If you met someone of a different belief could you defend your beliefs by what the word tells us regarding their being only one way to the Father? (John 14:6) Or about how to receive salvation? (1 John 1:9)
  • Transforms our thinking - The more we know the more we grow! By memorizing scripture it overall transforms the way we think about things. It changes the meditation of our hearts and we begin to think about those things that are of the Kingdom. (Romans 12:2)
  • Forces us to spend time with God - Time with God is so essential in our growth as Christians and in our walk. (more later) But if we dedicate time to memorize scripture we are spending time with Jesus as we hide Him in our heart. Jesus is the word and the truth so when we make time to memorize scripture we are inviting Him in!
There are several ways to memorize scripture and of course we all learn differently. I've made scripture memory note cards. I just purchased a .99cent package of note cards, wrote the passage on one side, and where the scripture is found on the other side. They are spread all over my house! I've found that it is good to focus on one scripture a week or so before moving on. (Great advice from my sis, D'Lorah!) There are also scripture memorization apps available. I use one called Remember Me (Android based). But you should do whatever works best for your learning style! This is a convenient way to study them while sitting in traffic, in the doctor's office, or anytime you have downtime and your phone is in your hand. Instead of scrolling through Facebook when killing time, go to your scripture app. I will list a few scriptures below that may be good ones to start with and if you have some you would like to suggest, please post them in the comments! Typically, I use the NIV when memorizing scripture and studying, but it is always good to cross reference with the KJV. I pray that they bless you and God gives us all the mental capacity to memorize His word.

Love you!

Finding Your Purpose

There have been a million books written on the subject, many of us believe we've discovered it, and God has actually revealed to a few of us what it is. PURPOSE! If you know what yours is and are on the path to fulfilling it, GLORY TO GOD and gone girl!!!! Personally I prayed on this for awhile and wasn't sure exactly how I would know what my purpose was or if it had been revealed. Honestly, I didn't think I ever really had special interest in anything, that God had not given me any gifts, and I was just...kinda...here. But the more I sought God and prayed, He begin to reveal my purpose to me and He will reveal yours to you too!

For some of us, it is hard to imagine God creating a world so big and giving everything a purpose but you feel like you are just going through the day-in /day-out routine of life. Children, work, school, church, family, and making the best of all of the above. Sometimes so tired that you can barely function and praying, "Lord, give me strength to make it another day!" Sis, there is so much more to life than that!!!! God has a special purpose for you that will bring meaning, fulfillment, and satisfaction to your life.. things only available when we are obedient to Him. I've talked to quite a few people that actually believed they knew what their purpose was, they knew what God had called them to do and they were on it, honey! But are you fulfilling your purpose as God ordered and is that really the purpose He created you for or is it what you want to do and enjoy doing? God says in His word (and you will see me quote this verse often) that He knows the plans He has for you, plans to prosper and give you hope for a future! (Jeremiah 29:11) Well that plan that He has for you includes your purpose.

Let's break down our purpose. It's important to understand each step:

1.) Your purpose as a Human.
Man was created in God's image not only to oversee all of God's other creations but also to bring God
glory. God's ultimate purpose for all of us is that He would be glorified (1 Corinthians 10:31) and that
the gospel and God's kingdom would be advanced (Genesis 50:20, Philippians 1:12, Colossians 1:20,
      2 Corinthians 5:5)
2.) Your purpose as a Christian.
As a Christian, our purpose is to go into the world and preach the good news to all. This is evident in the
New Testament as we see Jesus, the disciples, Paul, and others relentlessly spreading the gospel.
(Mark 16:15) Secondly, as Christians, we are to deny ourselves and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). In doing
so, it is our duty to do those things that Jesus did; pray for others, love others, and serve.
3.) Your purpose as a Woman.
Genesis 2:18 explains that God said it was not good for man to be alone so He created a helper
suitable for him. Yes, honey, you were created as a help-meet for man. I've heard before that as God
created man to lead, woman is created to manage. Secondly, the woman was created to be fruitful. We
will get deeper into the purpose of a woman later but just to scratch the surface it doesn't get any clearer
      than Genesis.
4.) Your purpose as YOU!
This is your individual fingerprint. This is what God has specifically called you to do, given you gifts to
accomplish, and made provisions for you to complete.  This includes the daily responsibilities you have.
God always equips us to do what he calls us to do. (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11,
Ephesians 4:11-13). I'm sure we will get to talk more in-depth about our gifts as well later.

Ok, so how do we find our individual purpose? Well this is accomplished by carefully studying the word and seeking God. (Psalm 119:105, James 1:5). It is also beneficial to talk to a spiritual leader, someone you trust. Maybe they can pray with you or give you direction. Where there is no counsel, purposes are frustrated, but with many counselors they are accomplished. (Proverbs 15: 22) You will know that you have found your purpose when you find peace. God is not a God of confusion so when we are operating in His will and according to the purpose He has for us, things will begin to fall into place, your steps will align, and even on the bad days you'll feel a sense of comfort knowing that you are doing those things God has ordered. (Isaiah 32:17). I would suggest reading The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren if you haven't. It is an amazing source of direction.

I love you!

Daily Prayer: God please reveal your purpose for my life. I want to be in Your will and bring you glory. I know that you will give me the desires of my heart if they align with Your will. Lord, help me to be all it is that you created me to be.
Scripture to Study: Many plans are in a man's mind, but it is the Lord's purpose for him that will stand. Proverbs 19: 21

You are a Masterpiece!

mas·ter·piece Noun /ˈmastərˌpēs/
masterpieces plural
  1. A work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship
    • a great literary masterpiece
    • the car was a masterpiece of space-age technology
  2. An artist's or craftsman's best piece of work
    • the painting is arguably Picasso's masterpiece
  3. A piece of work by a Craftsman accepted as qualification for membership of a guild as an acknowledged Master
    • YOU!

The Mona Lisa is considered one of the world's greatest works of art. Created between 1503 and 1506, the painting has been held with such high regard historically that it has exchanged the hands of kings, it has been stolen, auctioned, and highly sought after. On August 21, 1911, Leonardo daVinci's prized piece of work, the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world, was stolen right off the wall of the Louvre, a famous museum in Paris, France. The painting was eventually recovered. There have been several attempts at recreating the astonishing work of art. However, scientist have contended that the uniqueness and rarity of a masterpiece, the value of it, is determined by the inability to create an exact replica of the work.

A masterpiece? Personally I don't even think Mona is that cute. Forgive me, Lord, I digress. However her worth is estimated at more than $100 million. Masterpieces can not be recreated, they are often priceless, highly sought after, created with such diligence that their very existence becomes ingrained in the heart of it's creator. The creator, the artist, the sculptor, or architect creates the work to show his craftsmanship, to be admired, to be glorified. Therefore, you are a MASTERPIECE!

Just as I don't think Mona Lisa is all that beautiful, I am certain that people feel the same way about me. How many of the distractions of the world: men, money, or whatever have tried to steal you from your rightful place... in the Kingdom of God? How many of your friends, acquaintances, or frenemies have tried to copy your style or replicate you? Just like artistic masterpieces, no two people are exactly alike. That's because you were created by the ultimate Craftsman! You are a work of art, diligently constructed by Him. Every hair on your head, every stretch mark, every roll, pimple, or mole. Yes, God made you just like that!

Furthermore, God is our Master, right? Elohim... the strong one, explaining the sovereignty, creativity, and mighty work of our Lord in Israel. Adonai.... the master, owner. Several places in the text explains that God is our master (Matt 23:10, Matt 24:26, Luke 12:47) Are you not a piece of His work? Didn't He create you? Then, you are The Master's Piece!

You are an exquisite creation by God. He knew you before He formed you in the womb. You're worried about losing a few more pounds, getting your hair done, or finding something to wear.... when your creator who made you, adores you. You are His handiwork! Don't insult God by not loving His creation... YOU! Not only are you God's masterpiece, you are your Master's piece, the Craftsman's best piece of work. You belong to Him.

Psalm 139:13-17 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! (KJV)

Daily Prayer: God I know that you created me for YOUR purpose.  You hold my life in Your hands. Sometimes I complain about my flaws but I know that you made me uniquely, fearfully, wonderfully, and beautifully. You do all things well, Lord and I'm grateful that you took the time to make me.

Scripture to Study: Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you a a prophet of nations.
